Some people say the most advanced level of Wing Chun is to step out of the way of a punch, and then counterstrike without making any contact before the counterstrike hits its target. Fair enough. If it can be done, do it. If you can avoid the fight, avoid it.
But stepping to dodge a punch or kick is slow and therefore difficult. So when the fight is on, you'll probably want to block. But how do you block a fast punch? Watch the punch and you'll see nothing until it's too late. This is why we have a guard. We put our hands out to feel what comes in, and we re-arrange our guard to block what comes in; but we never drop our guard, even when touching the opponent.
How do we know what guard to use for every possible position that the opponent may be in? Where is the database of diagrams? Put down your books and glasses because they won't help here. Your eyes are now in your hands, and your book is sticking hands. You are co-author, alongside your training partner. Read this book until you can read between the lines and see the endless movements as just one. All positions are now the same - they are simply the state of balance.
